On TV4 on December 1, 2024, Professor Martin Bergö claimed that ashwagandha, like most supplements, can cause serious liver side effects. But this is not true. Not if the supplement, like KSM66, contains a pure and organic full-spectrum extract of ashwagandha root. However, one should be careful with the above-ground parts of ashwagandha because the leaves, stem and berries may contain substances that are hepatotoxic, cytotoxic or endocrine disruptors. Professor Bergö was probably unaware of this difference. 36 clinical studies in humans and 13 safety studies in animals show that KSM66 is safe and effective, and that the risk of an adverse reaction is as rare with KSM66 as with a placebo (inactive substance) - and that all adverse reactions were mild and transient.

As the main source, DTU cited a monograph from the WHO 2009, which in turn cited AHP 2000. But according to AHP, the quote from the WHO was not correct. Both AHP and The Botanical Safety Handbook (BSH 2023) now state, after a careful review, that there is no traditional use or documentation that ashwagandha root in normal doses could negatively affect pregnancy, on the contrary.
