AHP, (American Herbal Pharmacopoeia) states that the rumor that ashwagandha could induce abortion is incorrect and based on misquotes.

2024-07-03

In May2020, the Danish National Food Agency (DTU) published a safety report that concluded that ashwagandha could induce abortion. As the main source, DTU cited a monograph from the WHO 2009, which in turn cited AHP 2000. But according to AHP, the quote from the WHO was not correct.

Both AHP and The Botanical Safety Handbook (BSH 2023) now state, after a careful review, that there is no traditional use or documentation that ashwagandha root in normal doses could negatively affect pregnancy, on the contrary.
